Host cities for 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil selected

Brasília, Rio, and São Paulo are among the eight chosen

The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced Wednesday (May 7) the eight stadiums that will host the matches of the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which will be played in Brazil:

  • Maracanã (Rio de Janeiro),
  • Arena Fonte Nova (Salvador),
  • Arena Itaquera (São Paulo),
  • Mineirão (Belo Horizonte),
  • National Stadium (Brasília),
  • Arena Castelão (Fortaleza),
  • Beira-Rio Stadium (Porto Alegre), and
  • Arena Pernambuco (Recife).

A total of 12 Brazilian cities have applied to host matches. A FIFA delegation began its inspections on September 25 at the Maracanã stadium. The four locations that were left out were Cuiabá, Manaus, Natal, and Belém.

“We are deeply grateful to all 12 cities that took part in a thorough and competitive selection process to host the Women’s World Cup. It was a very difficult decision,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“All the bids were of an exceptionally high standard and demonstrated not only ion, but also great capacity and willingness to deliver an unforgettable tournament. It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I congratulate the eight Brazilian cities selected to host the Women’s World Cup,” he added.

The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues, said that the host cities chosen by FIFA already have modern stadiums and training centers to welcome athletes and fans from all over the world. In addition, he said, they offer a qualified hotel network and efficient urban infrastructure, with a mobility system, security, and public services ready to provide what an event of this magnitude requires.

Minister of Sport André Fufuca emphasized the importance of football. “Brazil is a power not only in football, but also in inclusion, diversity, and social transformation. We want to show the world that the ion for football can also be a powerful tool for promoting equality, respect, and opportunity,” he declared.

Calendar

The 2027 Women’s Cup will be played from June 24 to July 25. The opening match and the final will be played at Rio’s Maracanã stadium.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be the tenth edition of the tournament. Before Australia and New Zealand in 2023, the competition had been hosted by China, Sweden, , , the US, and Canada.

Spain is the reigning world champion. The US has won the most titles (four), followed by , which has won twice.
